Békéscsaba, the town of Munkácsy
A town that offers special architectural heritage, cultural experiences, and is buzzing with life every day of the year. Békéscsaba is one of the greenest towns among all the towns of county rank. Thanks to its parks and squares that are adorned with many flowers, and the cosy promenades on the banks of the Élővíz (Live Water) Canal, it is one of the towns of the country where life is most enjoyable. Thanks to our centuries-old buildings, our renewed cityscape and events, more and more tourists are visiting Békéscsaba. The largest Lutheran church of Central Europe, the Town Hall, the Jókai Theatre, and the Fiume Hotel’s beautiful old building are outstanding values in our architectural treasury.
Our guests, who are hungry for culture, are welcomed by the museum and the memorial house of Mihály Munkácsy, the world-famous painter who was born 178 years ago. Every year, the Csaba Summer series of events is organized, which offers colourful cultural programmes, ranging from the theatrical programmes of the Town Hall Evenings to pop and classical music concerts.
There is probably no person in Hungary who has not heard of the unparalleled atmosphere of the Sausage Festival. There are a significant number of tourists, even from beyond our borders, who visit Békéscsaba, the capital of the sausage, for the event that combines Csaba’s sausages and other unique gastronomic specialities.
It is impossible to list all the sights in a few words: Békéscsaba welcomes everyone with open arms. Visit us, see our town, and experience the hospitality of the people who live here!
