The Small Church of Békéscsaba, built in 1745 in the Baroque style, is the oldest church in the city. It was established on the initiative of Sámuel Tessedik, the famous Lutheran bishop, to serve the needs of the growing congregation. The building’s tower – which was the country’s first Lutheran stone tower – is 40 metres high, has five storeys, and also houses a firefighter’s flat. The name Small Church, although misleading, as it is considered a medium-sized church with 620 seats, was given its name in comparison to the Great Church.
The church can be visited by prior appointment.
